AIS Introduction
The Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) are technical standards for the automotive sector in India, established under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989. These standards are designed to enhance road safety, regulate vehicle quality, and ensure compliance with technical and safety requirements.
The Type Approval Certificate (TAC) certifies that a vehicle or its components comply with AIS standards and are suitable for use in the Indian market. The certification is managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and applies to both component-level and whole vehicle homologation.
Key Components
- Safety and Quality Assurance: Ensures compliance with safety and technical standards for roadworthiness.
- Conformity of Production (CoP): Verifies that manufacturing processes maintain the required quality standards.
- Certification Bodies: AIS certification can be obtained from authorities such as:
- International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT)
- Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI)
Components Requiring AIS/TAC Certification
Currently, 26 critical automotive components are subject to mandatory AIS certification, including:
- Brakes, tyres, lamps, reflectors, batteries, seat belts, fuel tanks, and number plates.
- Additionally, components like safety glass, tires and wheel rims require AIS certification and mandatory BIS approval for market eligibility.
AIS Certification Process
The AIS-037 specifies the AIS certification process.
The certification process differs depending on the type of product. In the case of safety-relevant components, the product must be tested in India and the production line must also be audited on site at the manufacturer’s premises.Â
The process for AIS/TAC certification follows the AIS-037 standard and includes:
- Application Submission: Preparation and submission of documents, including product specifications and compliance details.
- Factory Audit: On-site inspection of the manufacturing facility to verify quality processes.
- Product Testing: Comprehensive testing of the product at accredited laboratories or through witness testing under specific conditions.
- Certificate Issuance: Upon successful testing and audit, the TAC is issued.
- Product Marking: For certain products, the AIS type-approval number and manufacturer details must be marked on the product.
